Oost-Duiveland

Oost-Duiveland is the former name of the present Bruinisse (Zealand). Sailor Leendert Isaacse Slings from Hooge & Lage Zwaluwe has chosen in 1745 this area as sally-port. The ships which sailed in this time on the Dutch rivers, were without exception made from wood. Leendert probably sailed with his whole household on board. We know because in January 1744 (he then still was a citizen of Zwaluwe) he had to bury his daughter Lena in Brouwershaven (Zealand).

As a sailor, he visited many places. The women in the lifes of Leendert and his sons are all coming -- as far as we know -- from places along the rivers. Leenderts first wife was from Zaltbommel (along the Maas), his second wife from Gorkum (along the Waal) and his son Johannes marries a girl from Leerdam (along the Linge) and establishes there. His son Isaac marries Anna Margriet Makinje from Zaltbommel (daughter of the English hireling Kenneth Mackenzie) and they establish in Dinteloord.
