WHAT IS "DEPRON" ???
 |
 |
Probably the most common example
of depron use: the hamburger box. |
Detail
picture of the box. |
Depron is the same thing Mc Donalds uses as base material
for the "container" or "box" for
their hamburgers. Here in holland supermarkets also use
it as a tray to lay sliced cheese or meat on, before
wrapping foodwrap around it.

Basically it is a sheet of extruded polystyrene foam, no
beads, with a smooth "skin"-like finish on both
sides. A material that comes close to depron is
"blue foam", also known as "roofmate"
or "floormate", but the availiable minimum
thickness of blue foam is too much for what we want. If
you slice blue foam down (I tried it) to a usable
thickness, it still lacks some of the stiffness of
depron, and also its smooth and strong surface layer .

The most common and probably usefull color of depron is
white, but other colors are possible too. Black sheets
works nice for stealth models!
Depron is a very usefull material for building light and
beautifull model aircraft. And my way of molding
depron opens a
unique way of making nice, scale, 3-D fuselages.

Where
can you buy it?
Here in europe you can find it sometimes in shops
that are specialized in do-it-yourself building
materials. The intended use is
floor-underlayment. One kind I saw in such a shop
had closely spaced paralel grooves. This makes it
weaker, but it also aids bending in one
direction.
I prefer the normal, non-grooved, 3mm depron, and
purchased it at Innovative Models Aviation.
In the US you can buy or order it at Peck Polymers.
